Clachan Properties focuses on the acquisition, renovation and management of historic residential and commercial properties in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Founded in 2003, Clachan has extensive experience renovating historic structures having completed approximately $200 million in historic renovation. We now own and manage approximately 1000 rental units, in settings ranging in size from duplexes to 208-unit luxury apartment communities.

Clachan Properties breathes new life into often neglected and forgotten historic buildings by converting them into unique modernized apartment homes where we hope you will create your own history.  Our mission is to cultivate and instill a sense of community amongst our residents and staff alike.  Being a small company we are able to focus on all of our people and truly want everyone to have an incredible experience working with us and living in our one-of-a-kind living spaces.

Partners


Herbert Coleman, III

Herb Coleman is a co-founder of Clachan Properties and serves as its CEO. Herb was an agent with Northwestern Mutual Insurance for 19 years, specializing in estate planning and investments for high net worth individuals. Herb has managed dozens of real estate renovations over the past twenty years, first for his personal portfolio and since 2003 for Clachan Properties. Herb has spearheaded the creation of numerous historic districts and landmark designations, led multiple rezoning efforts, and manages the day-to-day operations of the company. Herb holds a B.S. in Finance and Marketing from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Hugh Shytle

Hugh Shytle is a co-founder of Clachan Properties and serves as its President. Until April 2003 Hugh served as the Managing Director and COO of Idealab’s Boston office. While associated with Idealab, Hugh served on the boards of directors of a number of early-stage companies including intranets.com (acquired by WebEx, now a Cisco company) and Picasa (acquired by Google). Prior to joining Idealab in February 2000, Hugh served as a General Partner at Tribeca Partners, a private equity investment company. Before that, Hugh spent 7 years as a Managing Director at Cowen & Company where, as a research analyst, he covered software and technology services companies. Hugh started his career serving as the Chief Operating Officer of Webhire (acquired by Kenexa, now part of IBM), an enterprise software company. Hugh holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an S.M. in Management from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
